No holiday to Luxembourg would be complete without a visit to its capital city, also called Luxembourg. Sitting amongst a breathtaking landscape of valleys, highlands and plateaus, it’s a stunning and unique city. The sights are endless, with Ville Haute, the medieval town, Kirchberg, the modern quarter, and Ville Basse, based in the depths of the gorges: just some of the city’s appealing districts.
Some of the best sights of the city include the Casemates Bock, an 18th century underground network of fortifications, and the Bock, a spectacular fort that the underground tunnels lead to. Neumunster Abbey and the Grand Ducal Palace are definitely worth seeing, as is the MUDAM, the city’s museum of modern art and home to some regional and international works of art.
If it’s history you’re after, the ancient town of Echternach is not to be missed on a Luxembourg holiday. The oldest town in the country, it boasts the basilica of the Abbey of Echternach, one of the most important religious constructions in Luxembourg.
Away from the city, there is an abundance of countryside to discover whilst on a holiday in Luxembourg. You will find a number of stunning, fairytale castles across the landscape, such as Beaufort Castle in the Mullerthal area, which is surrounded with a beautiful lake that is sprinkled with graceful swans.
Away from the historical structures you will find dense woodlands, countless streams and rivers, and hidden caves that simply beg to be explored. You can hike across some of the breathtaking terrain, take a cycling trip or even try some mountain climbing. The Haute Sure Nature Reserve is particularly well suited for those who love the outdoors, and offers activities such as horse riding, kayaking, fishing and swimming across its beautiful surrounds.
