It is a rapidly growing city with all the good and the extreme that can mean this - mainly in terms of shaping the urban landscape. Smyrna has a busy shopping center, surrounded by a huge bay and mountains. The wide avenues, with the glass facade of the buildings and the modern shopping malls, alternate with traditional tiled roofs, and the 18th century market, and the old churches and mosques reminiscent of its all-multicultural, yet deeply oriental style, the city has an atmosphere more than a Mediterranean Europe than the rest of Turkey.
