Karpathos is a unique island in the Aegean. Its landscape is dominated by fascinated contrasts: verdant mountains alternating with amazing beaches, while its picturesque villages, full of traditions and customs, mesmerise visitors. However, it still remains unspoilt by tourism. Though quite large, Karpathos is very sparsely populated, while only recently it started having an extended road network. The oldest trails of human presence on the island are identified in the end of the Neolithic Age (4000-3000 B.C.) while, according to mythology Karpathos was the island of Titans. In antiquity there were 4 fortified towns on the island: Arkesia, Vrykous, Karpathos and Nisyros, on the small island Saria, which in the past was joined to Karpathos. The island was later successively occupied by Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Genovese, Venetians and Ottoman Turks. In 1913 it was ceded to Italians and liberated by initiative of the locals in October 1944, while in 1948 along with the other islands of the Dodecanese it was incorporated to Greece. Karpathos has places of rare and wild beauty, villages of impressive architecture and a tradition that is very much alive, along with ruins from all eras of its long history.
